IB
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
John Adams High School is excited to offer our students the opportunity to participate in a worldwide program of study. Students who enroll in the JAHS IB Program will be joining students throughout the world in an engaging and challenging course of study.
The International Baccalaureate is a rigorous program of study for highly motivated students. The goal of the IBDP is to develop well rounded students with character who respond to challenges with optimism and an open mind. Students participating in this program are prepared to apply what they have learned in real world, complex, and unpredictable situations.
The IB's Diploma Programme is different from other curricula because it:
- encourage students of all ages to think critically and challenge assumptions
- develop independently of government and national systems, incorporating quality practice from research and our global community of schools
- encourage students of all ages to consider both local and global contexts
- develop multilingual students.
Students develop approaches to learning skills and the attributes of the IB learner profile. The IB learner is positively challenged to think critically and to learn in a flexible environment crossing disciplinary, cultural and national boundaries.
IB students take responsibility for their own learning and understand how knowledge itself is constructed, underpinned by our unique theory of knowledge (TOK) course.
Our programmes help IB students:
- ask challenging questions
- think critically
- learn across disciplines
- develop research skills proven to help them in higher education.
- IB programmes also encourage students to be active in their communities and to take their learning beyond academic study.

How it Works
Diploma Programme
- Freshman (9th grade) and Sophomore (10th grade) years
- During this time, students will be engaged in a rigorous curriculum that will prepare them to complete the IB Curriculum during their 11th and 12th grade years. Students will be encouraged to complete an accelerated course track including being advanced in Regents.
- Junior (11th grade) and Senior (12th grade) years
- Students will be taking the full course offering of the IBDP, engaging in 4 HL (higher level) courses that span through senior year, Spanish SL (standard level) course and a CORE course designed to facilitate the completion of the independent CORE IBDP components.
- During senior year, students will continue to participate in the 4 HL course and Spanish SL course, but will swap out the Core course for their choice of Global Politics or Visual Arts.
- CORE components must be completed independently throughout the junior and senior years.
Certificate Programme
- Starting Junior year, students can choose to participate in 1 or more HL or SL courses without having to commit to the full IBDP. Students pursuing the Certificate Programme will not be able to take advantage of the full benefits of the IBDP,
